Timeline of Animal Domestication

This estimation activity using a timeline could introduce artificial selection and domestication of plants and animals, which is related to evolution, genetics and heredity. It would give students practice reading a timeline.

You might start with a notice/wonder with the first sheet. Ideally, students will notice that there are dots on the timeline that represents years since the domestication happened. They might ask or start to estimate how long ago each animal was domesticated. For example, how long ago was the dog domesticated? You might use the distance between present day and 5,000 years ago and compare it to the distance between 10,000 years ago and the time when the dog was domesticated to estimate that dogs were domesticated 15,000 years ago. How would you estimate when other animals were domesticated, the duck, for example?

The second page includes a timeline that includes dates.
