This lesson is related to linear functions and is best used in conjunctions with other linear functions practice. It was originally taught in an online math study group over the summer of 2020. Thank you to the CUNY teachers and staff who supported the group. And thank you to our students who stayed dedicated to their studies over the summer, in really difficult circumstances.
The lesson is available at the URL above, including:
- a lesson plan in Google Docs (I shared this document from my screen as I taught)
- a Google Jamboard (online whiteboard) with the chart and questions
- a PDF handout with the chart and questions
- notes and questions from our class so you can see how our students approached the problem and what questions we asked as follow-up
- a review of the Paycheck Problem in Google Slides (I recommend using this in a second class, so that students have time to work on their problem on their own for a few days.)
The lesson is based on the Paycheck Problem, which I have written about here. The problem is based on an HSE exam practice question and ends with the question. The lesson starts with a warm-up conversation about jobs.
The lesson continues with a notice/wonder activity on this chart.
Students wrote down things they noticed and questions they had, then shared verbally and in the chat.
Students then worked together in small groups to figure out how Kareem is getting paid. They also work on related questions.
Students made presentations to the large group of what they learned.
Finally, students look at this practice test question based on Kareem’s paycheck:
