Many thanks to Amanda M., literacy instructor at the Adult Learning Center at CUNY’s Lehman College, for sharing these materials.
This series of tech workshops were developed over the summer of 2020 inspired by the abrupt transition to remote teaching. Not only were student tech skill limitations exposed, but so too were the challenges that come with teaching these basics remotely to the adult student population of varying learning levels. I quickly concluded that I needed to provide my students with a heavily scaffolded introduction to the basics of common online platforms used in remote teaching. This meant including as many visuals as possible. What began as work that would be used solely in my classroom, I am now happy to share with the broader adult ed community in hopes that both teachers and students alike will find themselves less intimidated by these common platforms, and by tech in general. Furthermore, that students will, by developing a stronger familiarity and comfort in using these apps, find themselves to be more competitive in the job market. Finally, it just makes class more enjoyable and fluid when everyone has a basic comfortability with engaging and interacting online. - Amanda M., 2020
