Social studies and science taught together? Yes! Civics, the Constitution, and science? Yes! Reader’s theater, discussion questions, vocabulary, essays topics, debate questions, graphic organizers, and reading graphs? Yes, all on topics connected to these questions:

Who should decide what’s allowed in textbooks? Who should decide whether evolution is taught?

When Scopes spoke for the first time after his conviction, he said, “I feel that I have been convicted of violating an unjust statute. I will continue in the future, as I have in the past, to oppose this law in any way I can. Any other action would be in violation of my ideal of academic freedom—that is, to teach the truth as guaranteed in our constitution, of personal and religious freedom. I think the fine is unjust.”

These SERP lessons are fantastic. We will definitely be writing a review of these materials. In the meantime, this lesson is recommended. (Teacher notes are available here.)
