Rose, Thorn, and Bud

At the beginning of a meeting or class, ask participants to think of a rose, thorn, and bud.

Rose: Something you’re proud of or excited about, something that has gone well recently

Thorn: A challenge you’re dealing with, something that has been difficult

Bud: A hope for the future, something you’re looking forward to, a new idea you’re interested in

You might have participants write for a few minutes to think of their rose, thorn, and bud, then go around to share. After sharing, you might debrief the activity with your participants:

  • What was this activity like for you?
  • What can we learn from doing this activity in a group?
