Olympic Men’s 100-meter dash

This problem offers an opportunity for students to practice the following CCRS standard:

Interpret the slope (rate of change) and the intercept (constant term) of a linear model in the context of the data.

The problem revolves around data gathered on the Olympic Gold medal winning times in the 100m dash from 1896 to 2012.. We recommend starting by showing students only the graph, or even an article with the data. Then ask students what they notice and what they wonder, using the notice/wonder protocol.
