This collection of texts is designed to teach adult students the basics of life science, and can be used both as a self-study resource and as the basis for classroom lessons. The collection includes a set of beginner texts as well as a set of mid-high texts.
The Text Collection is divided into the following sections:
- The Scientific Method
- Bacteria
- Cells, Cell parts, and Specialized Cells
- DNA, Chromosomes, Genes, and Proteins
- Human Body Systems
- Reproduction, Mitosis, Meiosis, Dominant & Recessive Traits, and Mutations
- Basic Chemistry
- Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
- Ecosystems
Each document combines graphs, pictures, and diagrams with text and video links. Suggested pre-, during-, and post-reading activities are included, as well as resources for review. The Table of Contents provides a suggested sequence for using the topics listed above, but it’s also possible to use some of the sets on their own–for instance, Basic Chemistry would pair well with Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration.
The NYSED/CUNY Life Science Text Collection was made possible through support from the New York State Education Department, Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services.
