Math Monday Handouts

This growing collection of materials was developed by NYSED Teacher Leader Dominador “Jun” Caoile in collaboration with the CUNY Math PD team as part of a project to increase awareness of HSE math content for non-math teachers.

Each handout has three pages, for students at different levels. Know the level of your students and decide which activity is appropriate to give them. Some classes might just work on the first page, others the first two, and others all three. Since these handout were created with non-math teachers in mind, stand on your strengths and incorporate literacy in dealing with the problem. Note that each handout has an answer key to help teachers feel comfortable working on it with students.

Jun rolled out his materials at his program and received a lot of positive feedback. 84% of students were motivated to work on the activities. 77% of students said the activities helped them learn math concepts. 88% of students thought the M&M activities should be an ongoing part of their instruction. 100% of non-math teachers said the activities help them integrate math into their teaching.

The questions at the heart of Jun’s work were:

How can we increase a program wide awareness of the math content of the HSE exam?

What are some activities that non-math teachers could do with all students to infuse math instruction across the curriculum?

These M&M activities are part of Jun’s answer. What other ideas do you have? Please share them below in the comments.
