This short video (just over 4 minutes) gives a brief overview of the ways that graphs can mislead and even manipulate when created in a careless or dishonest way. It gives examples of how graph creators (1) distort the scale on both the y and x axes, (2) choose a time range to exclude important events that impacted the data, (3) leave out relevant data, (4) leave out the context. The video suggests a general habit of looking at the labels, numbers, scale, and context when looking at a graph. It’s a good introduction that can be followed up with having students look at misleading graphs.
