This activity comes from the Math Assessment Project and is a very engaging way to explore various geometric formulas, especially those used for calculating volume which students are likely to see on the HSE exam.

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to solve problems involving area and volume, and in particular, to help you identify and assist students who have difficulties with:
• Computing perimeters, areas, and volumes using formulas.
• Finding the relationships between perimeters, areas, and volumes of shapes after scaling.

In addition to these geometry topics, teachers can connect to algebra (seeing structure in expressions) as students have to consider how changes to a specific measurement impacts the area/volume of a figure – for example, how does doubling the height of a cylinder impact its volume?
