Sector Descriptions: A Matching Activity

Lavern Nelson and Jezel Nicholas of the New York City RAEN (Regional Adult Education Network) led a great activity, featuring their adaptation of the 10 Industries activity from Career Fundamentals at the New York Association for Continuing and Community Education (NYACCE) conference in April. Groups were given the names of the 10 industry sectors the CareerKits focus on, then were asked to match the name of the sector with a short description of it.

Five of the ten sectors
Six of the ten sector descriptions

Once matches were made and discussed, we paired sectors and their descriptions with images of the sectors. See the sample images below, which can be found through google image searches, creative commons or other sources.

Get the PDF of these materials here.

Adaptations and Extension Activities

Sector descriptions can be modified for lower or higher levels.

Discussion questions can be added, prompting students to analyze the images:

What jobs do you see in the image? What people do you see in the image? What are they doing? Where are they? Describe the truck/uniforms. Write 3 questions you have about the jobs you see, etc.

You may use this activity as a springboard to gauge interest in various sectors and bring in further readings and activities related to the sectors students seems most interested in.
