One unique aspect of the NYSED/CUNY CareerKits is that they approach career content through academic lessons. As students learn about career pathways, they are at the same time strengthening their reading, writing, math, computer literacy and critical thinking skills. Because these activities combine both career content and academic skills development, teachers, who are often pressed for time, don’t have to worry about pulling students away from the academic skills practice they need when they teach about careers.
The screencast below takes viewers through the CareerKit introduction which gives a big picture description of the career content and academic skills included, provides instructions for accessing all CareerKits, and shows examples of graphing, vocabulary, math and writing activities.
