Paraphrasing for better comprehension: “Know Before You Enroll”

How many of us as BE and HSE teachers have encountered students who would like to go to college, but can’t, because they have defaulted on loans made to them to attend a school that offered them a too-good-to-be-true educational deal?  Know Before You Enroll [English | Spanish | other languages], an informational flyer produced by the New York City’s Mayor’s Office included in Career Fundamentals, presents methods for assessing the quality of job training programs in order to find ones that grant useable career credentials, are affordable and reputable.

In this lesson, Sandra Bethel, an Instructional Facilitator at the Queens Adult Learning Center, guides students through the process of paraphrasing the flyer for better reading comprehension, and in preparation for writing an informational letter of advice to other students.  Paraphrasing is an invaluable skill for pre-HSE and HSE students, and this lesson will help students understand the strategies they can use for successful paraphrasing while also informing themselves about a very important topic for their futures.
