Beyond bus drivers
Transportation is involved in every industry sector, and every day of our lives. Whether we drive, take public transportation or walk, we are benefitting from Transportation workers who maintain roads, operate and repair vehicles. At work, we receive and ship supply orders through this sector. Everything from paper clips to peas are stored and moved and usually stored a few more times between the harvest of the raw materials and the moment we open the box in a store, office or home. As with every sector, technology plays a big role, with digitized systems of scheduling, navigation and tracking.
Transportation and Warehousing employees can usually begin work before they earn a high school or equivalent diploma, usually with a driver’s license and clean driving record, and can be promoted as they accumulate training and earn more advanced credentials.
Many employees in this sector have Civil Service jobs – they work for local, state or the federal government. Civil Service jobs often come with excellent benefits and reliable job security. Public sector employees are often unionized, and enjoy the benefits of collective bargaining, clear, predetermined pathways to promotion and pay increases. Many civil servants are eligible for increased wages through voluntary overtime work.
The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit in Transportation & Warehousing introduces students and job-seekers to careers in this sector, while providing opportunities for practice in reading, writing, math, technology and critical thinking.
